The 150th anniversary of the publication of our national epic the Kalevala was celebrated in 1999. The Kalevala is, of course, not the sole property of Finland, but part of a great world collection that would probably never have come into being without the inspiration of the epics of Antiquity. On the other hand, it too has influenced the form and structure of epics published later. Numerous events are being arranged in Finland and abroad during the year to celebrate the anniversary.
